Sapphire, mineral, Hardlex and acrylic watch crystals

Crystal materials trade scratch resistance, impact behaviour, optical character, price and repairability. The best choice depends on the watch and how it will be used.

The clear cover over a watch dial can be sapphire, mineral glass, a strengthened proprietary glass such as Hardlex, or acrylic.

Sapphire resists scratches best. Acrylic is the easiest to mark but can be tough in impact and simple to polish. Mineral glass sits between them in several respects. Hardlex is Seiko's name for a hardened mineral glass rather than a separate basic material.

No option wins every comparison.

Sapphire crystal

Synthetic sapphire is crystalline aluminium oxide. It is extremely hard and resists ordinary abrasion from keys, grit and daily contact better than the other common choices.

It can still chip or fracture under a sufficiently hard impact, especially at an exposed edge. A scratch-resistant material is not the same as an unbreakable one.

Sapphire also reflects more light than acrylic, so anti-reflective coatings are often used to improve clarity.

Mineral glass

Mineral watch crystals are based on glass that has been shaped and strengthened for the application. They resist scratches better than acrylic but less effectively than sapphire.

They are generally less expensive than sapphire and can provide a useful balance of optical quality and impact behaviour.

Once deeply scratched, replacement is usually more practical than attempting to polish the surface.

What Hardlex means

Hardlex is Seiko's trademark for its hardened mineral crystal. Treatments improve the surface compared with ordinary untreated glass, but it remains within the mineral-glass family.

Different watch models can use different shapes and specifications, so one experience does not define every Hardlex crystal.

It should be compared with a particular sapphire, mineral or acrylic component in the context of the complete watch.

Acrylic crystal

Acrylic is a transparent plastic, often known through trade names such as Hesalite or Plexiglas. It is lighter and softer than glass or sapphire.

Fine scratches can often be polished out with an appropriate plastic polish. The material can also flex and may resist shattering in impacts that would chip a brittle crystal.

It can develop deeper marks, crazing or ageing that requires replacement.

Scratch resistance

Hard particles cut softer surfaces. Sapphire's high hardness gives it the strongest routine defence, while acrylic will show wear readily.

A sapphire watch can still appear scratched if an external anti-reflective coating is marked or if another material has been transferred onto the surface.

Diagnosis matters before using any abrasive treatment. Polishing a coated sapphire can damage the coating without improving the crystal.

Impact and edge design

A material's behaviour under impact depends on its toughness, thickness, shape and support in the case.

A domed crystal and a flat crystal of the same material can respond differently. Exposed edges are more vulnerable than edges protected by a bezel.

Case design is therefore as important as the name of the transparent material. Shape changes the answer.

Optical character

Acrylic can give vintage watches a warm appearance and gentle distortion at a domed edge. Sapphire looks crisp but may produce strong reflections without coating.

Mineral glass also varies with shape and treatment. Curvature can magnify or distort dial details from an angle.

These effects are design choices as well as technical compromises.

Anti-reflective treatment

Coating the inside surface protects the optical film from wear while reducing some reflection. Coating both sides can make the crystal appear clearer, but the outer layer is exposed to scratches.

Residual blue, purple or green reflections come from the coating design.

The presence of an external mark does not always mean the underlying sapphire has been cut.

Vintage originality

Acrylic is correct for many historic watches. Replacing it with sapphire can change the profile, reflections and tension on the case even if a conversion part exists.

Collectors may value the correct crystal shape and material because it affects the whole appearance of the dial and bezel.

A fresh period-correct acrylic can be a better restoration choice than a technically harder substitute.

Water resistance

The crystal material alone does not set the water-resistance rating. The gasket, tension ring, retaining system, case geometry and installation all contribute.

A replacement must have the correct dimensions and profile. An almost fitting crystal can compromise the seal or create stress.

The assembled watch should be pressure tested after crystal work when water resistance is expected.

Polishing and replacement

Fine acrylic marks are often repairable. Mineral and sapphire scratches usually lead to replacement, although specialist resurfacing exists for some simple components.

Replacement cost rises with complex domes, coatings, cyclops lenses, brand-specific shapes and integrated gaskets.

Ask whether a quoted part includes the correct anti-reflective treatment and markings.

Choosing for a tool watch

Sapphire suits owners who prioritise a clear, scratch-resistant surface. Mineral or hardened mineral may provide an affordable compromise where impact and replacement cost matter.

Acrylic remains valid for watches where toughness, historical appearance and easy polishing are useful.

The purpose of the watch and the protection provided by its bezel should guide the choice. For buyers, the useful comparison includes the exposed shape and expected replacement cost, because two crystals made from the same material can behave quite differently in different cases and bezel designs.

How to care for each

Keep grit away from every crystal before wiping it. Use a clean soft cloth and follow the manufacturer's guidance for water and cleaning products.

Only polish acrylic when you know the material and accept that polishing removes a small amount of it. Avoid home abrasives on mineral glass, sapphire and coated surfaces.

A crystal is both an optical component and part of the case seal.

A trade, not a hierarchy

Sapphire gives exceptional scratch resistance. Acrylic offers flexibility, repairability and a distinctive look. Mineral glass and Hardlex occupy practical middle ground.

The right material is the one that suits the case, price, service plan and expected use.

A specification can tell you what the crystal is made from. Its shape, coating and installation determine how that material behaves on the watch.
