What 3N, 4N and 5N gold colours mean

N colour numbers describe ranges used for coloured gold alloys and coatings. More copper generally shifts yellow gold towards pink and red, but the finished watch also depends on composition, process and surface.

Watch descriptions often use 3N, 4N and 5N to distinguish shades of yellow, pink and red gold.

The numbers belong to colour designations used in the jewellery and watch industries. In broad terms, 3N is yellow, 4N is pink and 5N is redder. The change is commonly achieved by increasing copper and reducing silver within an 18-carat gold alloy.

They are useful reference categories, but they do not make every component with the same number look identical.

What 18 carat means

Pure gold is 24 carat. An 18-carat alloy contains 75 per cent gold by mass, with the remaining 25 per cent made from other metals.

Those additions improve hardness and change colour. Copper moves the colour towards red, while silver tends to support a paler yellow or greenish tone.

The exact supporting elements also affect casting, machining, polishing and long-term appearance.

3N yellow gold

3N is associated with a yellow-gold colour. Its balance of copper and silver keeps the familiar warm yellow appearance without the stronger red shift of higher N numbers.

It can look different from very pale modern yellow gold or from pure 24-carat gold.

Surface finish and lighting can make the same alloy appear cooler, warmer, brighter or deeper.

4N pink gold

4N contains a colour balance that moves further towards pink. More copper relative to silver produces a softer red influence while retaining a clear gold character.

Brands may call it pink gold, rose gold or use a proprietary name.

Those marketing terms are not always applied consistently, so the numerical designation can offer a more specific clue when it is genuinely tied to the alloy.

5N red gold

5N shifts further towards red through a higher copper share and lower silver share within the non-gold portion.

On a polished case it may appear richly warm. Under cool light or beside a yellow-gold component, the copper tone becomes easier to see.

Some brands still call 5N rose gold because consumer language does not follow a strict border between rose, pink and red.

Alloy and coating are different

A solid-gold case uses the alloy throughout the component. A plated or PVD-treated component may use a surface colour intended to match a 3N, 4N or 5N reference.

The visual target can be similar while thickness, wear behaviour and value are entirely different.

Product information should distinguish solid 18-carat gold from gold plating or a gold-coloured coating.

Proprietary gold alloys

Brands sometimes add platinum, palladium or other elements to improve colour stability, hardness or manufacturing behaviour. They may give the alloy a proprietary name.

Such an alloy can resemble a standard N colour while differing in detailed composition.

A proprietary label should be supported by information about gold content and the practical benefit claimed, not treated as a new precious-metal category without explanation.

Why colour can change

Copper-rich gold can develop subtle surface change through contact with air, moisture and chemicals. Skin oils and residues also alter the way light reflects.

Professional cleaning can restore appearance, but polishing removes material and should not be routine simply to chase factory brightness.

A solid alloy does not lose its underlying colour when lightly scratched, unlike a thin coating that can reveal a different base.

Surface finish changes perception

Polished gold reflects the room and can look bright or dark depending on its surroundings. Brushed gold scatters light and often appears softer.

Small blasted surfaces can look more saturated because their diffuse reflection reduces sharp highlights.

Comparing alloys from catalogue images is difficult unless lighting, finish and image processing are controlled.

Adjacent materials matter

A 5N case beside a black dial may look redder than the same case beside a brown strap. Steel hands or white printing also change the perceived warmth.

Bracelet links can reflect neighbouring skin and clothing. Even sapphire coatings can add a faint colour cast.

Colour is physical, but our perception of it is contextual.

Matching replacement parts

Crowns, pushers, bezels and bracelet links should match both material and finish. A replacement made from a different alloy or coating can stand out even when described with the same broad colour name.

Service centres use reference-specific parts partly for this reason.

On vintage watches, original components may have aged together, making one newly polished part appear different.

Hallmarks and disclosure

Hallmarks can confirm precious-metal fineness and manufacturing responsibility under the applicable system. They do not usually communicate the full copper-silver recipe through a simple 3N or 5N stamp.

Check the case markings and manufacturer specifications when solid-gold content matters.

A dial described as 5N coloured may not be made from solid gold at all.

Is one colour better?

Higher N does not mean higher gold purity or better quality. An 18-carat 3N alloy and an 18-carat 5N alloy both contain the same nominal proportion of gold.

The number describes colour direction, not a ranking.

Choose the tone that works with the dial, strap and your own skin rather than treating redness as an upgrade.

A useful colour language

The N system helps distinguish warm gold shades more clearly than the loose words yellow, rose and red. It works best when the maker identifies whether the colour comes from a solid alloy or a surface treatment.

It cannot eliminate variation from proprietary compositions, finishing and light.
