What a Geneva stripe is
Geneva stripes are broad decorative bands applied to movement bridges and rotors with a controlled abrasive tool. They change the surface appearance, but do not prove how the movement performs.

Geneva stripes are the broad, repeated waves seen across many watch-movement bridges and rotors. In French they are known as Côtes de Genève.
The pattern is made by moving an abrasive tool across the component in overlapping passes. Each pass leaves fine curved marks that catch the light, while the sequence creates the larger bands visible to the eye.
It is a finishing technique with a long watchmaking association. Its quality depends on preparation, consistency and how it relates to the rest of the movement.
How the pattern is made
A rotating abrasive head or wheel contacts the flat surface of the bridge. The component or tool advances in controlled steps so each new band overlaps the previous one.
The tool leaves many fine scratches within each broad stripe. Their direction and curvature create the changing reflection.

Traditional machines and modern controlled equipment can both produce the finish. The visual result does not reveal the age of the machine by itself. That control is visible.
Why the bands look three-dimensional
The bridge remains essentially flat. Light reflected from the microscopic abrasion makes alternating areas appear bright and dark.
Tilt the movement and the highlights move across the stripes. This creates an impression of depth without deep grooves being cut into the component.
A heavily cut or poorly controlled pattern can affect the surface more noticeably, but a normal stripe is a shallow finish.
Surface preparation comes first
Stripes do not hide every flaw. The bridge must be flat and prepared consistently before decoration.

Scratches, waviness or uneven plating beneath the finish can remain visible. Edges, countersinks and jewel settings also need clean treatment if the movement is to look coherent.
A strong stripe pattern on a poorly prepared bridge is decoration without refinement.
Alignment across bridges
On some movements, adjacent bridges are striped so the bands appear to continue from one component to the next.
This requires the parts to be positioned and finished with their final relationship in mind. Small alignment errors become obvious across the gaps.
Continuous striping can show careful planning, but it remains one visual detail among many.
Stripes and plating
The pattern may be applied before a final galvanic coating, depending on the process. Rhodium plating is common on brass bridges because it protects the surface and gives a bright neutral colour.
Other colours and coatings can be used. The optical effect depends on both the texture and the finish above it.
A dark-coated bridge can carry Geneva stripes just as a silver-coloured one can.
Are they functional?
The stripes are primarily decorative. Claims that they trap dust or improve performance should not be treated as their main purpose.
Any microscopic effect is secondary to the clear visual intention: organise the broad bridge surfaces and make them respond to light.
The movement's accuracy and durability come from its geometry, materials, adjustment and service condition.
Hand-applied and machine-applied
Even traditional decorative work uses tools and fixtures. Hand-applied can mean that a craftsperson controls the pressure, spacing and movement of the part at each pass.
Automated equipment can create consistent stripes at production scale. Poor manual work is not superior to excellent controlled work simply because a hand moved the lever.
Look at the finish itself and the degree of care across the movement.
Common faults
Uneven width, inconsistent overlap and bands that wander from their intended direction can make the surface look untidy.
Stripes may stop awkwardly near an edge or lose definition around screws and recesses. Refinished bridges can show patterns that no longer align or that cut into stamped markings.
Inspection under changing light reveals more than a single high-contrast photograph.
How stripes differ from perlage
Perlage uses overlapping circular marks, often on baseplates and hidden surfaces. Geneva stripes form longer parallel bands across a larger visible area.
Both rely on controlled abrasion and repeated placement. They organise the movement differently and are often used together.
Neither name establishes whether the work was done by hand, machine or a combination.
Finishing and the Geneva Seal
The Geneva Seal includes detailed requirements for eligible movements, but Geneva stripes alone do not grant the seal.
Movements made outside Geneva can use the pattern, and many do. The term describes the finish rather than protected geographic certification.
Likewise, a movement bearing the seal is judged against a much broader set of construction, finishing and functional rules.
Can the finish be damaged?
A tool slip, careless cleaning or corrosion can mark the shallow pattern. Restoring one local area is difficult because a new pass may not match the neighbouring stripes.
During service, bridges should be handled and cleaned using methods appropriate to their plating and decoration.
Polishing the surface would remove or blur the original texture.
What to look for
Check whether bands are even, well oriented and clean at edges. Look at how they align across adjacent bridges and whether screws, bevels and jewel settings receive equal attention.
Also inspect less dramatic areas. A movement with bold striping but rough countersinks and unfinished edges may be prioritising the quickest visible effect.
Good finishing reads as a complete system rather than a single recognisable pattern.
Decoration with a clear purpose
Geneva stripes turn a flat bridge into a changing field of light. They can help define movement architecture and connect several components visually.
They do not make a calibre accurate, rare or hand-finished by definition.
Their value lies in execution: a simple repeated abrasive mark, applied with enough control that the broad surfaces look deliberate from every angle.
