- The new Health Sensing System measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day.
- Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm cases across aluminium, titanium and ceramic.
- Australian pricing starts at RRP A$649 including GST, with availability from 18 September.

Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 with a new Health Sensing System, an S11 chip and a choice of 42mm or 46mm cases. Announced in Australia on 10 September 2026, it is the mainstream watch in Apple's new generation, sitting below the Ultra 4 while sharing its higher-frequency heart-rate readings and new readiness score. Prices start at RRP A$649 including GST, with pre-orders open now and retail availability from 18 September.
The sensor reads far more often
The most consequential change sits against the wrist. Larger, more efficient green LEDs in the optical sensor allow Series 12 to measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day. Apple says its background heart-rate readings are 60 times more frequent than Series 11, while heart-rate variability measurements are up to 24 times more frequent. The live reading is available through an updated Heart Rate app and a new watch-face complication.
This remains a consumer wearable rather than a substitute for clinical care. Apple says the denser passive record provides deeper insight into fitness and physiological state and makes the Exercise and Move Activity rings more accurate. Anyone buying principally for health monitoring should still check feature availability, compatible hardware and Apple's own medical disclaimers for Australia before relying on a particular function.
Readiness turns data into a daily prompt
Series 12 adds a readiness score from zero to 10. It combines recent activity, training load, vital signs and sleep score, then assigns one of four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. The score updates through the day as new data arrives and shows which factors are driving the result. That makes it a planning tool rather than another isolated graph, whether the decision is to train hard, ease back or simply understand a low-energy day.
The S11 chip supports both the Health Sensing System and new Audio Intelligence features due later in 2026. Apple says those features include Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound Recognition and faster Shazam. Some require an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone and will arrive in beta, so they should not be treated as present-day buying reasons. The immediate changes are the new sensor cadence, readiness and the longer workout endurance already available with the watch.

Battery gains focus on workouts and charging
Everyday battery life remains rated at up to 24 hours, but Apple's outdoor-workout figure rises to 10 hours with the heart-rate sensor active and the iPhone absent. A 15-minute charge is rated to add as much as 12 hours of battery life. Those are laboratory figures and real endurance will vary with configuration, mobile reception, workouts and temperature, but the direction is useful: this update puts its largest battery gain into sustained activity rather than stretching the basic daily rating.
Three case materials, many finishes
Apple offers Series 12 in aluminium, titanium and ceramic. The aluminium cases come in dark bronze, black, light gold and space grey, while titanium is offered in radiant gold and natural finishes. Ceramic returns in pearl white and night blue. Aluminium models receive Ceramic Shield 2 over the display, which Apple says is 60 per cent tougher than the Ion-X glass used on Series 11. The supplied photography also shows the range with both fabric and fluoroelastomer bands.
The broader material selection matters because this is one technical platform sold in very different forms. A dark aluminium model is the uncomplicated sports option, natural titanium shifts the emphasis towards a conventional metal watch, and the two ceramic cases make the strongest visual break from Series 11. All still run watchOS 27 and use the same core sensor and processor story, so the price step is chiefly about case material, finish, band and cellular configuration.
That common platform also simplifies the choice between the two sizes. The 42mm and 46mm versions differ in scale, display area and final price, but neither is positioned as the technically lesser watch. Wrist fit should decide the case before colour or material. A larger display can make complications easier to read, while the smaller case will suit buyers who want the sensor package with less physical presence.
Apple Watch Series 12 price and availability
Apple Watch Series 12 starts at RRP A$649 including GST in Australia. Pre-orders opened on 10 September and availability begins on Friday, 18 September 2026. Apple has not reduced this launch to a single reference, so final pricing varies with the 42mm or 46mm case, material, connectivity and band. Buyers comparing configurations should use Apple's Australian store price for the exact combination rather than treating the entry figure as the price of every Series 12.
