Eight years and a whole catalogue of wristwatches in, Bangalore Watch Company has made a pocket watch. It's called the Forty Seven, it's 46mm across, it hangs off a leather lanyard, and it costs 120,000 rupees.
The name points at 1947, and the brand is not being subtle about it. Its own copy lays out what India inherited at independence: per capita income of about 50 dollars, literacy at 12 per cent, and the argument that the generation handed all that spent its time building institutions rather than settling scores. Whether a watch can hold up an idea that heavy is a question you can answer for yourself. The object does suit it. A pocket watch is what your great-grandfather carried and your grandfather didn't.
Linen texture under a deep dome
The dial is off-white with a linen pattern pressed into it, and under the domed crystal that texture catches light unevenly, so the surface never quite settles into one flat colour. That's what linen dials are for. Big Arabic numerals, a small seconds register at six, a printed minute track round the rim, and vintage Swiss Super-LumiNova in an old-radium tone on the numerals and the hands.
The hands themselves are long, tapered and blue. Blue hands on a warm cream dial is a pairing that's very hard to spoil. The case is rose gold PVD over 316L surgical steel, and the push-pull crown wears the BWC logo.
Why a pocket watch gets quartz
The movement is a Swiss Made Ronda 6004.D with a 40-month battery. Some readers will see quartz and close the tab, which is a fair enough instinct on a wristwatch and the wrong one here. A pocket watch sits still in a pocket, a bag or a drawer for days at a time. An automatic would be stopped every single time you reached for it, and a hand-wound, lovely as that would be, means winding a watch you take out about four times a year.
With quartz you open the drawer and it's telling the right time. For something most owners are going to keep as a keepsake, that's the sensible engineering call, even if it isn't the romantic one.
Brushed rose gold, and room for a message
The case runs 12mm thick with 30 metres of water resistance, and the crystal is K1 hardened rather than sapphire. At this money that's a fair trade for the depth of the dome. The strap is oil-pulled leather with a matching rose gold PVD clip, worn as a lanyard.
The case back is plain brushed rose gold with the Bangalore Watch Company mark and SINCE 2018 on it, and you can have a message engraved there. The one the brand puts in front of you reads "To success, fulfilment, and milestones. Love, Dad." That tells you who they think is buying, and as graduation presents go it's a long way ahead of another Apple Watch.
