Hublot and Jeff Koons make time inflate and orbit

The 42 mm Balloon Dog turns sculpture into a colourful automatic, while the MP-14 Origin puts Hublot's first automatic central tourbillon inside sapphire.

Hublot and Jeff Koons have launched two watches that take the same idea in opposite directions. The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog turns the artist's inflated sculpture into a relatively conventional automatic watch. The MP-14 Origin builds a 44 mm sapphire structure around Hublot's first automatic central tourbillon. One is playful and legible. The other is a transparent mechanical spectacle.

Both were announced in New York on 16 September 2026. That shared date matters because this is not a logo exercise spread across unrelated products. Hublot has treated the collaboration as a two-part study in volume, reflection and motion, with separate movements, materials and production limits.

Classic Fusion Balloon Dog makes softness out of hard parts

The 42 mm Balloon Dog is offered in mirror-polished stainless steel, red anodised aluminium and blue anodised aluminium. Each edition is limited to 200 pieces. The rounded case, domed sapphire crystal and convex dial are designed to look as though internal pressure has pushed them outwards, translating the smooth tension of Koons's sculpture into a watch case.

The small details carry more of that argument than the bright colours. Hublot shapes the crown like a balloon's inflation valve, adds a flexible decorative tail at 10:30 and uses a Balloon Dog silhouette as the seconds-hand counterweight. The hands and indexes have similarly swollen forms with Super-LumiNova. A padded metallic leather strap continues the rounded surface away from the case.

The blue and red versions use anodised aluminium because the material can carry saturated colour across the case. The steel model instead leans on a mirrored finish. Hublot identifies the automatic movement as the manufacture MHUB1710, with a customised tungsten oscillating weight that repeats the rounded design language. The watch has a date at three o'clock, 50 metres of water resistance and a 50-hour power reserve.

This is the more direct half of the collaboration. A reader does not need a diagram to find the time, and the Balloon Dog references reward a closer look without replacing the watch's basic function. The visual joke is that rigid metal and sapphire appear inflated. The technical work sits in making that illusion continuous rather than attaching a miniature sculpture to an existing Classic Fusion.

Even the presentation case follows that logic. Its dog-shaped exterior is colour matched to the watch and finished to suggest the same inflated surface. That consistency will not make the design restrained, but restraint is not the point. Hublot has carried one recognisable form from case and crown through to packaging without confusing it for a conventional sculpture watch.

MP-14 Origin puts the mechanism at the centre

The MP-14 Origin is limited to 30 pieces and is considerably more ambitious. Its 44 mm octagonal case combines a sapphire middle with titanium components and an integrated sapphire bracelet. Hublot says machining the transparent case takes about 534 hours. The structure leaves the display open from edge to centre, where the tourbillon sits beneath a blue-varnished sapphire dome inspired by Koons's Gazing Ball works.

Four concentric rings surround that centre. Two rotating rings show hours and minutes through suspended indicator cubes: red for the hours and grey for the minutes. Two fixed rings carry blue sapphires for the hour and quarter markers. Hublot sets the four rings with 202 baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires totalling about 2.6 carats.

Calibre HUB9014 is Hublot's first automatic central tourbillon. Its peripheral winding mass keeps the middle open while supplying a 60-hour power reserve. The movement runs at 3 Hz and contains 594 components. Winding and time-setting controls are concealed in the architecture under the labels “ENERGY PULSE” and “COSMIC ALIGN”, avoiding a conventional crown on the edge of the case.

The approach is less about immediate reading than arranging the display as an orbital system. The cubes move around the central tourbillon, while the transparent case and bracelet remove much of the usual visual boundary between movement and exterior. It is a watch built to make its mechanics the subject, rather than merely the means.

The two launches therefore share a visual vocabulary without sharing a level of complexity. The Balloon Dog adapts a three-hand automatic format around Koons's curves. The MP-14 makes time indication one moving layer inside a much larger mechanical composition. Treating them together makes Hublot's range of interpretation clearer than either watch does alone.
