IWC splits its Ingenieur anniversary across two sizes

The 40 mm and 35 mm limited editions share a brushed silver dial, then diverge on magnetic protection, movement and case-back treatment.

IWC has marked 50 years since the 1976 Ingenieur SL reference 1832 with two limited-edition Ingenieur Automatic models. Announced on 15 September 2026, the pair comes in 40 mm and 35 mm sizes, each with a brushed silver-plated dial and an individual limit of 1,150 pieces.

A rare silver dial replaces the usual grid

The modern Ingenieur is normally identified by a structured grid dial, five visible bezel screws and an integrated steel bracelet. IWC keeps the case and bracelet architecture for these anniversary editions but changes the dial to a vertically brushed, silver-plated surface inspired by a rare version of the original Ingenieur SL.

That choice does more than add an anniversary colour. Removing the grid reduces the number of competing lines across the dial and makes the radial hour markers and central hands more prominent. Rhodium-plated hands and metal markers keep the palette close to the stainless-steel case, with Super-LumiNova added for low-light reading.

IWC has also altered the logo. The lightning bolt normally placed below the Ingenieur name has been replaced by the number 50. The small commemorative mark occupies an established part of the dial identity without adding a separate anniversary badge.

The silver treatment refers to a less common historical watch rather than the best-known reference 1832 configuration. IWC says only 598 examples of the original Ingenieur SL were made between 1976 and 1983. Its commercial reception was limited at launch, but the design later became a central reference point for collectors and for IWC's own 2023 Ingenieur revival.

Forty and thirty-five millimetres are not duplicates

Both anniversary watches use stainless-steel cases and integrated bracelets. The bezel on each is held by five functional screws, with satin-finished surfaces and polished edges. The bracelet connects through its middle links, a construction intended to support articulation close to the case.

The finishing separates the sizes. IWC gives the 40 mm bracelet a satin finish, keeping it visually consistent from case to links. On the 35 mm model, the middle links are polished. That extra contrast suits the smaller case without changing the underlying bracelet structure.

Offering two diameters also avoids treating the anniversary as one design scaled mechanically. The 40 mm reference IW328910 retains the more technical anti-magnetic construction associated with the Ingenieur name. The 35 mm reference IW324909 instead exposes its movement through sapphire and uses different decorative finishing.

Those choices give buyers a real mechanical distinction. The larger model places magnetic protection and a long power reserve behind a closed architecture. The smaller model puts the movement on display. Size is therefore connected to function and presentation, not only wrist coverage.

Two movements answer the brief differently

The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary uses IWC-manufactured calibre 32111. Its automatic winding system uses double pawls and stores 120 hours of power. A soft-iron inner case surrounds the movement to protect it from magnetic fields, echoing the practical purpose that has followed the Ingenieur name since the collection began.

Five days of reserve changes how the 40 mm watch fits into a rotation. It can be set aside for several days and return to the wrist without stopping. The soft-iron enclosure prevents a display back, but that trade is consistent with a watch whose lineage is based on engineering and magnetic protection.

The 35 mm model uses IWC calibre 47110 behind a sapphire case back. IWC finishes the movement with circular graining and Geneva stripes, then adds a gold-plated oscillating weight. The warm rotor colour provides a clear visual point within a movement otherwise defined by steel and silver tones.

IWC does not present the smaller calibre as a reduced version of 32111. It is a separate movement with a separate case-back treatment. The 35 mm edition is mechanically coherent on its own terms and does not carry every choice made for the 40 mm model.

The anniversary is measured in individual editions

Each reference is limited to 1,150 pieces. That means the limit applies separately to IW328910 and IW324909, not as a combined run shared between both sizes. The total production across the pair can therefore reach 2,300 watches.

The number is considerably larger than the 598 original reference 1832 watches IWC says were produced from 1976 to 1983. The anniversary pieces are not attempting to recreate the scarcity of the historical model. Their purpose is to connect the current collection to a particular dial, logo and design anniversary.

IWC Ingenieur 50th Anniversary price and availability

IWC announced both anniversary references on 15 September 2026. The official Australian product pages list the 40 mm IW328910 at A$22,300 including VAT and the nominally 35 mm IW324909 at A$19,300 including VAT. Both pages also provide appointment and enquiry routes.

What the release does establish is a clear choice. The 40 mm watch combines calibre 32111, a 120-hour reserve and soft-iron magnetic protection. The 35 mm watch combines a smaller case, polished bracelet centre links and a visible calibre 47110. The shared silver dial and altered logo bind them to the same anniversary without making them mechanically interchangeable.
