Laurent Ferrier’s Classic Moon enters yellow-gold dusk

A 20-piece annual calendar pairs a taupe-to-chocolate dial with gold sheen obsidian and an 80-hour hand-wound calibre.

Laurent Ferrier has made its Classic case in yellow gold for the first time. The new Classic Moon Dusk pairs that 40mm 18-carat yellow-gold case with an annual calendar, a moon phase in gold sheen obsidian and a dial that fades from light taupe into chocolate. Only 20 pieces will be made.

The colours do most of the storytelling, but the underlying watch is mechanically substantial. Day and month appear in windows at 12 o'clock, a central hand indicates the date and the moon phase shares the lower half with small seconds. The annual calendar needs correction only when February gives way to March, provided the watch has kept running.

A dial organised around dusk

The opaline dial moves from pale taupe towards a darker chocolate edge. White Roman numerals and baton markers establish the hour track, while the date scale uses pastel yellow figures and an ochre 31. That last change gives the longest months a discreet visual marker without adding another aperture.

Laurent Ferrier uses its assegai-shaped hands for hours and minutes, made in white gold and painted white. The central date hand is yellow gold, allowing it to separate from the time display. A slim white-painted white-gold baton hand runs the small seconds without a counterweight.

At six o'clock, the moon is rendered in gold sheen obsidian, a deep black stone showing green, brown and golden reflections. Those changing tones give the lower display a material depth that paint or lacquer would struggle to reproduce, and link the astronomical complication to the warm metal of the case.

The Classic case in yellow gold

The case measures 40mm across and 12.9mm thick. It is made from 18-carat 2N yellow gold and is water resistant to 30 metres. The rounded case, narrow bezel and ball-shaped crown keep the familiar Laurent Ferrier profile intact, while correctors for the day and moon phase sit discreetly in the caseband.

This is not a small watch by classical-calendar standards, but the soft case geometry and restrained bezel avoid making the diameter look more aggressive than it is. Its 12.9mm profile leaves room for the rounded case to remain visually distinct. A mocha nubuck strap, hand stitched and lined with tone-on-tone Alcantara, finishes with a matching yellow-gold pin buckle.

A manual calibre with an 80-hour reserve

The LF126.02 is a hand-wound movement with 266 components and 25 jewels. It runs at 3Hz, or 21,600 vibrations per hour, and stores 80 hours of power. A power-reserve indicator is placed on the movement side, leaving the dial to the calendar and time indications.

Calendar correction can be made forwards or backwards through the crown's intermediate position. That detail reduces the frustration of setting a stopped annual calendar, especially if the indicated date has moved past the current one. The movement uses a Swiss lever escapement and a screw balance.

The moon phase has its own corrector between eight and nine o'clock, while the day corrector is at ten. Clear separation matters on a calendar watch. It reduces the chance of changing one indication while trying to adjust another and keeps the crown's functions manageable.

An annual calendar is often best understood by what it does not require. The mechanism distinguishes 30-day and 31-day months, so it advances correctly through most of the year. February is the exception, and the owner makes the single seasonal correction after its shorter run. That is materially easier than correcting a complete calendar at the end of five months each year.

The bidirectional calendar setting is equally practical after the watch has stopped. With 80 hours in reserve, the Classic Moon can sit through most of a long weekend and remain current. If it does run down, the ability to move the calendar in either direction can shorten the route back to the correct date.

Price and availability

The Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Dusk is priced at CHF93,000. The brand's online listing shows the watch as available and states worldwide insured shipping, with the edition capped at 20 pieces. No separate Australian retail price was published when checked, so the Swiss-franc figure is retained without an unofficial conversion.

There are many ways to make a calendar watch feel richer: add apertures, engrave the case or expose more of the movement. Laurent Ferrier has chosen colour, stone and metal while keeping the established display architecture readable. Yellow gold could easily have pushed the watch towards nostalgia. The gradient dial and obsidian moon make it feel more particular than that.

The result is not subtle in price or scarcity, but it is controlled in execution. Every warm element has a cooler counterweight, from the white-painted white-gold hands to the pale printed track and deep black obsidian. Dusk is an evocative name. Here it is also a precise design brief.
