Legare puts a 1932 double-balance idea on the front of Chapter 1

The 37.5 mm Chapter 1 AGP Inverted rebuilds Albert-Gustave Piguet's student chronometer as a pair of hand-finished titanium watches.

Watchmaking is very good at rediscovering an old solution just as the rest of us have become convinced there can be nothing new under a sapphire crystal. The more interesting revivals do not reproduce an archive piece line for line. They recover the unresolved idea inside it, then ask what modern manufacturing and a different set of proportions might do. That is the ambitious premise behind Legare's Chapter 1 AGP Inverted.

A student watch becomes Chapter 1

The starting point is a double-balance chronometer made in 1932 by Albert-Gustave Piguet as his graduation project at the Vallée de Joux School of Watchmaking. Piguet later became Lemania's technical director from 1948 to 1980 and created the Lemania 2310 chronograph calibre, but Legare has gone back to the much earlier pocket watch, when two balances and a differential were the work of a student testing an unusually difficult idea rather than an established manufacture exercising its archive.

Legare's official launch release is dated 18 August 2026. Its account is more interesting than the launch mechanics: it imagines how Piguet's double-balance design might have evolved had he founded a house around it instead of joining Lemania. The name Chapter 1 makes sense in that context, because the watch attempts to continue someone else's unfinished line of thought.

Two balances bring the mechanism to the dial

Calibre LC1-AGP-01 places two balance wheels at the front of the watch, each beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with a planetary differential averaging their rates. Legare locates that differential at the fourth wheel, closer to the escapements, and stacks the two fourth wheels and seconds wheels so the train forms a straight vertical line. The differential also drives the small-seconds display, which turns a piece of regulating architecture into part of the time display rather than leaving it as hidden engineering.

Each balance uses a side-angled lever escapement, an arrangement Legare chose to keep the calibre to 13 lignes, or 29.33 mm, so the movement could sit inside a 37.5 mm wristwatch. The hairsprings use Breguet overcoils or Phillips terminal curves and are pinned in opposing directions, while the differential divides power between the oscillators and averages the two rates. Legare states a 50-hour power reserve and 34 jewels, with each movement assembled, adjusted and individually tested in Switzerland.

Small dimensions, complicated surfaces

The Grade 5 titanium case is 37.5 mm in diameter and 9.95 mm thick including its sapphire crystals, figures that keep an elaborate open-worked watch from becoming a machine displayed on a wrist. Its double-stepped bezel has deliberately square transitions, the lugs are flared, faceted and curved downwards, and the caseband is fluted. Legare separates mirror-polished raised surfaces from sandblasted recesses so adjacent planes do not dissolve into one another, an especially useful discipline when titanium can otherwise look soft under diffuse light.

A screw-in caseback gives the watch 5 ATM water resistance, enough for the ordinary accidents of a dress watch but not an invitation to treat it as a sports watch. I keep returning to the 9.95 mm thickness, because putting two balances on display usually leads a designer towards scale and spectacle. Here the spectacle is the movement itself. Keeping the case below 10 mm lets the old pocket-watch geometry remain the large thing in the composition without making the watch physically large.

Elegant or Darth is really a choice about contrast

The Elegant version leaves its German silver movement untreated, then uses Côtes de Genève, mirror-polished bevels and polished countersinks to describe the bridges. Darth takes the same architecture through a fine sandblasted surface and black rhodium treatment, retaining polished bevels and countersinks so the edges still register. Beneath both, Legare adds perlage to the baseplate and bridge interiors and a snailing finish to the barrel, details intended to reward inspection rather than change the watch from across a room.

The names make Darth sound like the adventurous choice, but Elegant is the one I would take. In Legare's photographs, its untreated German silver and striped finishing make the geometry easier to read at a glance, while the two balances sit against a warmer-looking frame. Darth is more immediate and more graphic, certainly, but this is a watch built around a conversation with movement design that began in 1932. I would rather see the architecture than the costume.

Elegant and Darth are each limited to 25 individually numbered pieces and priced at CHF 81,944 excluding taxes. Legare has not announced Australian retail availability, so prospective buyers here need to enquire with one of those partners.

There is plenty here designed to attract the deep end of independent-watch collecting, from the historical reference to the exposed differential and the hand-finished titanium case. What makes the Chapter 1 more than a collection of knowing signals is the restraint around them: 37.5 mm, less than 10 mm thick, and two finishes that clarify the mechanism rather than bury it. Legare could have presented the idea much more loudly. Instead, it has made a difficult old mechanism legible.
