Locman's Montecristo Lady mixes titanium and steel in a 36mm case from 520 euros

Twenty-one versions of Locman's Montecristo Lady, all 36mm, from €520 with Miyota quartz and €935 with the automatic.

One of the dial colours is called cipria. It's Italian for face powder, and the dial is precisely that shade of pale pink. The dial belongs to the new Montecristo Lady, 36mm across, in a case that puts steel and titanium together, and the cheapest of them runs a Miyota quartz movement for €520.

Locman is an Elba company. Marco Mantovani was born at Marina di Campo on the island in 1961 and started the firm in 1986 with Fulvio Locci, drawing watches for the big Swiss houses first, then building them under contract, before the name went on a dial of its own. Montecristo, the island the collection takes its name from, is the next one south in the same archipelago.

Two movements and a great many dials

It went up on Locman's own store this week in twenty-one configurations, which sounds like a wall of choice until you count what actually varies. Two movements: the Miyota quartz from €520 on a Saffiano leather strap, and the automatic, which Locman calls the Solo Tempo Automatico SIO, from €935 on a bracelet. Three cases: steel and titanium, the same again with diamonds, or steel under a rose gold PVD coating.

Then the dials, where somebody clearly stopped saying no. Black, blue, cipria, cherry, white, pink, light blue, and mother of pearl in white or grey.

€520 at one end, €1,863 at the other

€520 buys the steel and titanium case, a plain dial and the Saffiano strap. White mother of pearl on that same strap is €579, the rose gold PVD case with a black dial is €598, and grey mother of pearl on a bracelet is €629. The automatic opens at €935 with a plain dial on a bracelet and gets to €1,400 with mother of pearl. Put diamonds on the case and the quartz is €1,548, the dearest automatic €1,863.

That's better than a three to one spread inside a single model name, and the bottom of it is the part worth stopping on. €520 for a case with titanium in it undercuts most of what the Swiss will sell you in titanium at all. Locman gets there by being small enough not to fuss about keeping its collections in neat price tiers.

Locman's store quotes euros to an Australian visitor, and there's no local price sitting behind that yet. There's also a notice up: orders placed from 31 July for delivery outside Italy won't be processed until 24 August. Worth knowing before you get impatient.

Screw heads left where you can see them

Locman leaves the construction on show. Screw heads sit on the case sides, and the titanium and steel read as separate parts bolted together rather than one smooth block. On cipria or cherry it turns into jewellery with an industrial streak. On the plain black quartz it's a tool watch that has somehow ended up at a wedding.
