Zodiac editions are the easiest money in watchmaking. Pick the animal, print it somewhere on the dial, add a number to the case back, and a certain quantity will sell themselves regardless of whether anyone involved thought hard about it. Which is why it is worth noting when one arrives with the animal reduced to a single small gold shape at seven o'clock and nothing else changed. That is what Luminox has done with the Atacama Field Year of the Horse Limited Edition.

The restraint is the story here

The dial is sandblasted black, a finish that kills reflection completely and gives the surface the dry, powdery look of a matte photographic print. Onto it Luminox has put a gold-tone brand shield, gold minute numerals on the inner 24-hour track, and one small gold horse's head at seven o'clock. The horse is roughly the size of a hole punch. You could wear this watch for a fortnight before a colleague noticed there was an animal on it at all.

Everything else is the standard Atacama Field, which is to say a proper legibility instrument. Applied Arabic numerals in dark grey sit against the black at low contrast, while the actual timekeeping is handled by the tritium tubes at every hour marker and along the hands. Those tubes are the whole Luminox proposition: gas-filled, self-powered, glowing continuously for up to 25 years, and requiring no charging in daylight before a night shift.

CARBONOX at 62 grams, which changes what the watch is for

The case is 43mm across and 13mm deep, made from CARBONOX, Luminox's carbon-composite material, with a screwed-on 316L stainless steel case back. Complete on its strap the watch comes in at 62 grams, and that is the figure that decides how it wears. A 43mm steel field watch is a presence on the wrist all day. This one is roughly the weight of a tennis ball, and after an hour you stop registering it, which is exactly what you want from something meant to be worn outdoors and forgotten.

The bezel is fixed rather than rotating, the crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating, and water resistance is 100 metres. That number is worth reading correctly: it is a swimming and rain rating, not a diving one, and Luminox has printed "100 METERS" on the dial rather than leaving anybody to guess. The lugs are 23mm, which is wide and which the strap needs to be, because a narrow strap under a 43mm case looks like a mistake.

A quartz movement, said out loud

Inside is a Ronda 515, Swiss made, and there is no complication or apology attached to it. This is the correct movement for this watch. A field watch bought for outdoor use benefits from a battery in a way a dress watch does not: it keeps time when it sits in a drawer for six weeks between camping trips, it does not care about being knocked, and it does not need winding with cold hands. Anyone shopping in this part of the market who wants an automatic already knows where to find one.

The strap arrangement is more generous than the price suggests. The watch ships on a rubber strap finished in black textile with gold stitching, and a second red webbing strap comes in the box. The red one is the interesting inclusion, because it takes the watch from quietly military to something considerably louder, and it means the single gold horse suddenly has company. Two straps also means the limited edition survives the first one wearing out.

Whether the animal earns its place

I have a low tolerance for zodiac releases and I went into this expecting to be annoyed. I am not, and the reason is scale. The moment a brand puts a large illustrated horse across the dial, the watch becomes a novelty and the tool underneath it becomes irrelevant. Keep the horse small enough and the calculation inverts: it is a field watch with a private joke on it, and the 600 people who buy one will be the only ones in on it.

Whether that is worth the limited-edition premium is a fair question, and the answer depends on how you feel about paying for a second strap and a small piece of gold-coloured horse. What is not in question is that the watch underneath is the same one Luminox has been quietly refining for years, and that it is available here with an Australian price already set, which is more than most limited editions manage. Horses, after all, are the one bit of imported culture Australia has never needed help with.
