Nomos gives the 36mm Club Campus two new dials, from A$2,820 landed

Full rose and all olive join the hand-wound Club Campus, with the Australian store quoting prices that already include import taxes and duty.

Every one of us has a watch we hand to people who are about to buy their first proper mechanical, and for a decade or so a lot of us have been handing over the same one. The Club Campus does the job because it is small, honest, hand-wound and made by a company whose whole personality is refusing to be pompous about any of it. Nomos has now added two colours to the 36 millimetre version, and they are the two most confident ones the line has had: Club Campus full rose, reference 706, and Club Campus all olive, reference 707.

Pink that had to survive being called pink

The full rose dial is the one that will get argued about, and Nomos has been careful with it. It is not a pastel and it is not the dusty salmon everyone reaches for when they want pink without saying pink. It sits closer to the inside of a rare piece of lamb than to anything decorative, deep enough to read as a colour rather than a tint, and it shifts a good deal depending on whether you are under a window or a ceiling light. The all olive is the quieter proposition, a green that reads almost brown indoors and comes alive outside.

Both carry the numeral arrangement that defines the Campus, which mixes Arabic and Roman hour markers on the one dial. It is a design conceit rather than a functional one, and it is the single detail that tells you a Club Campus from across a room. The hands are rhodium-plated with a white Superluminova inlay that glows blue, and the seconds hand is neon orange on both dials, which is the sort of small violent decision that keeps these watches from ever looking like heirlooms.

Thirty-six millimetres, and the number that actually matters

The case is 316L stainless steel, screwed together, 36 millimetres across and just 8.1 millimetres tall. Neither of those is the interesting figure. The one to look at is 44.3 millimetres lug to lug, because that is what determines whether a watch sits on a wrist or hangs off it, and at 44.3 the Club Campus will disappear on almost anybody, including the many people for whom a 36 millimetre watch is otherwise the whole point.

A domed sapphire crystal sits over the top, and water resistance is 10 atmospheres, which Nomos rates as suitable for swimming. Turn it over and there is a small whale engraved on the back, which the brand puts on every watch it rates to 10 atmospheres or more. That is a joke a company makes when it is confident, and it is a better use of a case back than another line of Latin.

A hand-wound calibre in a watch at this money

Inside is the DUW 4001, the in-house hand-wound calibre Nomos uses across its smaller pieces, 2.6 millimetres tall and 23.3 millimetres across, on 17 jewels, with the brand's own swing system and DUW regulation system. Power reserve is up to 53 hours. On a hand-wound watch that number works differently to how it works on an automatic: you are going to wind this every morning regardless, so 53 hours is not a schedule, it is the margin you have before a watch you took off on Thursday needs resetting rather than just restarting.

The point worth making is what a hand-wound in-house movement usually costs. Very few brands will sell you one at all below serious money, and fewer still will put their own escapement regulation in it. Nomos has been quietly doing this for years, and it remains the least remarked-upon bargain in the German industry.

Vegan velour, which is a better strap than it sounds

Both references come on a strap Nomos calls vegan velour, which is Alcantara with remborde edges, hand-sewn in Germany and carbon neutral in its production. Beige on the full rose, anthracite on the all olive, 18 millimetres at the lug. Alcantara has a slightly suede-like nap that takes a while to break in and then stays comfortable in heat in a way leather does not, which is worth knowing if you are buying one to wear through a Sydney February.

Nomos offers both colours with either a solid steel back or a sapphire crystal back, and also in a larger 38.5 millimetre version, so there are more combinations here than the two references suggest.

Nomos states that all prices on the Australian store include applicable import taxes and duty, with free shipping and returns, so those are landed figures rather than European numbers waiting to grow at customs.

Four hundred and thirty dollars is a lot to pay for a window onto a movement, and on a watch this size I would take the steel back and the whale. That is not the fashionable answer. It is the one that leaves you with the version of this watch that will get worn to the beach without a second thought, which is very obviously what Nomos designed it for.
