Spend an afternoon looking at watches under A$500 and you notice the same thing, that almost everything is round. The rectangle is the shape you have to climb the ladder for, the one that starts at Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre and does not really come back down, because a square case costs more to make at every stage than a circle does. The corners want finishing on four sides instead of one continuous curve, the crystal has to be cut to shape rather than stamped, and a round movement never sits quite square inside it. So the budget end mostly leaves it alone, and Pagani Design did not, which is the whole reason the PD-1838 is worth talking about.

What went up on 13 August is a squared, faintly tonneau case with heavy stepped bezels above and below the dial, Roman numerals, a date at six o'clock and a fluted crown with the Pagani logo cut into it. Pagani lists it at 33mm across and 11mm thick, in 316L steel under a sapphire crystal. Small numbers, and on a rectangle they behave differently to how they read on the page.

The shape you normally have to go upmarket for

Thirty-three millimetres sounds tiny, but on a rectangle the figure is measured across the width rather than corner to corner, so the watch wears like a slim thing rather than a small one. The length down the wrist does the rest, and the eye ends up reading the proportion instead of the millimetre count. This is the format Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre have owned for the better part of a century, and almost nothing under A$500 goes near it, because the round case is simply cheaper to machine from bar stock to buckle.

Eleven millimetres is the honest catch

Here I have to be fair to the doubters, because 11mm is genuinely thick for this shape. A dress rectangle wants to lie flat against the wrist and slide under a cuff, and the stepped bezel that gives the PD-1838 its architecture also piles on height that a slimmer case would never carry. On the full black version the extra depth simply vanishes into the colour and you stop noticing it, while on the white dials it is the one detail holding the watch back from looking properly expensive.

QUARTZ, printed on the dial like a boast

Look closely beneath the Roman numerals and the dial says QUARTZ, in capitals, out loud. It is a lovely bit of period swagger from the years when quartz was the costly, clever technology and you wanted people to know you had paid for it. Nobody at Pagani planned for it to read as vintage charm in 2026, but it does, and it hands the dial a bit of character the spec sheet would never suggest.

The black dial earns the look further with a sunburst finish that radiates out from the centre, so the surface shifts as your wrist turns and catches the light like the brushed lid of a tin, while the two white dials stay flat and quiet by comparison.

Sapphire and 316L where the price says there should be neither

Turn to what the money actually bought and it keeps surprising. The crystal is synthetic sapphire, so keys sharing a pocket and a careless desk edge will not mark it the way the mineral glass at this price usually does. The case is 316L stainless steel, the grade that shrugs off sweat and salt air rather than staining under them. Water resistance is 5 bar, which on a dress watch covers rain, a hand under the tap and a knocked-over drink, and I would keep it out of the pool. The movement is a plain, unnamed high-precision quartz, which is exactly what you would expect here and no cause for complaint at the money.

Three references, and a product page that argues with itself

The three versions are a white dial on a black strap, a white dial on a brown strap, and the full black on black leather, all at the one price and all on a standard 20mm strap, so swapping the leather for something better is a five-minute job and a cheap way to rebuild the whole look. I went back and forth on which to point at and keep landing in the same spot: get the black. A black dial in a squared steel case with Roman numerals and a date is a look people pay several times as much for, and the sunburst gives it something to do in changing light that the white dials, pleasant as they are, simply do not.

One genuinely odd thing before you order: Pagani has pasted the wrong description into its own PD-1838 listing, so the first specifications you read belong to another watch entirely, with the real numbers sitting further down the page and printed onto the product images. The watch is better than the page selling it. What the PD-1838 really does is move the rectangle off the shelf you always had to reach up for, and once a squared sapphire dress watch can be had for under A$200, the shape stops being the thing you are paying a premium for at all.
