Ressence Puts Its Own Movement Behind an Oil-Filled Dial

The TYPE 10 DN couples an RW-04 calibre to its oil-filled display through magnetic transmission, with 100 pieces due from November.

  • Ressence launched the TYPE 10 DN on 16 October as its first oil-filled watch driven by its own RW-04 automatic calibre.
  • A magnetic coupling moves the rotating display through oil while the mechanical movement stays in air inside a separate sealed chamber.
  • Limited to 100 pieces at CHF 45,000 before tax, the TYPE 10 DN is due in November and currently invites availability notifications.

Oil-filled displays have long been Ressence's clever way of making a dial appear almost attached to the crystal, yet the movement behind that effect has posed a separate engineering problem. The mechanical works need air; the rotating display lives in oil. Ressence now puts its own RW-04 calibre behind that display for the first time. Its official press release set the launch for 16 October, and the 100-piece watch carrying the new arrangement is the Ressence TYPE 10 DN.

A dark surface made from moving parts

The TYPE 10 DN wears its Dark Night colour across the case, dial and integrated rubber strap. Ressence describes the idea as a continuous form rather than an assembly of visible parts. The polished Grade 5 titanium case measures 41.5 mm across and the complete watch weighs 82 g. Those numbers suggest a substantial diameter without the heft a metal bracelet might add, but the case profile and strap will decide the fit in practice. The brand gives no case thickness or lug-to-lug figure in its press release.

There are no conventional hands. Ressence's ROCS 10 display rotates hours, minutes, a second time zone and a 120-second runner across a convex surface, while a colour indication within the hour disc responds to the oil's temperature. The minute track consists of 24 titanium pieces with alternating sandblasted and brushed surfaces. Their brushing changes direction from segment to segment, so the ring should catch light differently as the wrist moves. The engraved indications carry Grade A Super-LumiNova for reading after the room goes dark.

The dial's apparently simple surface takes a considerable amount of work to animate. Ressence counts 538 components in the complete watch, including 196 within the oil-filled ROCS 10 module. Such a count can sound like a trophy in a specification sheet. Here it describes the engineering hidden behind a display that tries to erase the visual seams between its moving discs. I can see why the brand wants that effect, even if I would want to spend time learning the second-time-zone display before relying on it at an airport.

Oil on one side, air on the other

The RW-04 is a self-winding, in-house designed movement with two barrels and a stated 60-hour reserve. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement itself remains in an air-filled chamber, while the upper display sits in 2.95 ml of silicone-based oil. Ressence transfers motion between the chambers magnetically through a titanium barrier, avoiding a physical shaft and opening between them. That separation is the technical point of the watch: the fluid can sharpen the view of the dial without surrounding the escapement.

Temperature adds another problem. Oil changes volume as conditions change, so the TYPE 10 includes an expansion membrane to absorb the difference. Ressence says it tests each oil-filled watch at both high and low temperatures before shipping. The brand's own account is a reminder that a clear dial is an outcome of mechanical work, not merely a visual trick. The 120-second runner also serves as a shock absorber, an unusual pairing of indication and function that belongs to this architecture rather than to a conventional seconds hand.

The integrated rubber strap keeps the colour uninterrupted below the case and closes with a polished Grade 5 titanium buckle carrying a hard-DLC coating. It is a sensible choice for a watch whose case and dial are meant to read as one object: a conventional bracelet would introduce an entirely different rhythm of links and reflections. There is a trade-off, of course. A strap makes the silhouette quieter, but anyone buying a watch at this level may reasonably wish for a second wearing option. Ressence lists this configuration with the rubber strap.

There is no crown projecting from the case. Winding and setting are handled through the caseback, where a sapphire opening also leaves the RW-04 visible. Front and rear crystals are double-domed sapphire with internal anti-reflective treatment, and Ressence rates the case to 5 ATM. That is a useful everyday rating, although this is not a diver and the brand does not suggest using it as one. The fixed bezel's 24 titanium segments continue the same surface treatment as the minute track.

Ressence TYPE 10 DN pricing and availability

Ressence lists the TYPE 10 DN at CHF 45,000 excluding taxes, with production limited to 100 pieces. Its press release says availability begins in November 2026. The brand's product page currently offers an availability notification rather than an immediate purchase. Ressence has not given an Australian list price or local delivery date in those sources.

The question with a technically dense watch is whether its complexity buys the wearer anything. In this case, the magnetic coupling, oil chamber and bespoke calibre are working towards a particularly clear, nearly continuous display, not another complication squeezed onto the dial. Whether that trade is compelling at CHF 45,000 will divide people. The important step for Ressence is that the oil-filled design and the movement driving it now come from the same design programme.
