Shinola composes a dial out of coloured triangles, then lets you see the movement

Four new 41mm Detrolas: two Color Theory art dials with clear resin backs at US$495, and two sunray dials on a new brick link bracelet at US$595.

I have spent years being politely uninterested in Shinola. The Detroit story always felt like it was doing more work than the watches were, and a quartz movement in a resin case is not the sort of thing that usually gets past my defences. Then the brand put out a dial covered in coloured triangles, backed the movement with clear resin so you can watch it work, and I found myself looking at the Detrola for the first time in a decade. Four of them have landed at once.

Two dials that are actually about colour, and two that are about light

The pair Shinola calls Color Theory are the reason to pay attention. Both take a field of small triangles and run them across the whole dial, arranged so that each one sits in deliberate relationship with the ones beside it. The Cool version works in pinks and blues, the Warm version in oranges, reds, ochres and earthy greens, and the brand is explicit that the series is a tribute to American art. It is a genuinely unusual thing to do with a dial, because most patterned dials pick a texture and repeat it, whereas this one is composed.

What lifts it above novelty is the second hand. Shinola has run a mint green sweep across both Color Theory dials, with mint green printed tracking around the edge, and that single cool note stops the warm version tipping into an autumn leaf pile. The hands are a shiny warm grey with C1 lume. The other two, Vapor Gold and Cypress Green, take the opposite approach with sunray dials, applied vertical brushed numbers on the gold and matte alabaster numbers on the green, so the colour changes as your wrist turns rather than sitting still.

A case that is mostly plastic, and better for it

The construction is the part people either love or refuse to entertain. Every Detrola here has a stainless steel core co-moulded inside TR90 resin, which is 41 millimetres across and 9.72 millimetres thick on the strap versions, rising to 10.85 millimetres on the bracelet ones. TR90 is the material eyewear frames are made from, which tells you what to expect on the wrist: light, warm to the touch in a way steel never is in July, and effectively immune to the small knocks that leave a polished steel case looking sad after a fortnight.

The Color Theory pair uses a polished cream resin, which is the more interesting choice, while Vapor Gold and Cypress Green go with a polished clear resin that lets the case disappear into whatever it is sitting on. Wire lugs and a pumpkin crown carry over from the Detrola's existing design language, and there is a flat sapphire crystal across all four. Depth rating is 5 ATM with a screw-down crown, which covers rain, a sink and an unplanned swim, and is not an invitation to dive.

New to this series: you can see it working

The genuinely new feature is on the back of the Color Theory pair, where a clear resin backing lets you look straight at the movement. Inside is the Argonite 705 quartz, hand assembled in Detroit from Swiss and other imported parts, and I want to be careful here, because a display back over a quartz movement is not the same proposition as a display back over an automatic. There is no rotor sweeping past, no train to follow. What there is instead is a small, tidy piece of machinery doing its job, and on a watch that costs under five hundred dollars, showing it rather than hiding it is a confident move.

Shinola has fitted the two Color Theory models on quick-release rubber straps, blue on the Cool and orange on the Warm, both 20 millimetres. The Vapor Gold and Cypress Green get something new: a brushed silver brick link bracelet, which sharpens the whole watch up considerably and is the reason those two cost a hundred dollars more.

Which one, and the argument for the cheaper pair

I keep coming back to the Warm. The Cool version is the more obviously handsome of the two and would be easier to wear, and yet the Warm one is the version that looks like somebody made a decision, because getting ochre and red and green to sit together without turning muddy is much harder than balancing pink against blue. That is where I have landed, though I concede it is the sort of view that could change entirely on the wrist.

Vapor Gold (S0120494113) and Cypress Green (S0120494125) are US$595 each on the brick link bracelet. Shinola sells from the United States and no Australian price has been announced, which is the usual position for this brand and a shame, because a light resin case in a hot summer is a better idea here than in Michigan.

A watch that costs less than five hundred dollars and still gets its own composed dial artwork is not a thing the industry produces very often. Shinola could have printed a gradient and called it a colourway. Instead somebody sat down and worked out where each triangle went, which is more effort than the price point demands, and that is the whole reason this release is worth your time.
