A rotary telephone once turned each number into a small physical destination, arranged around a circular dial. Timex translated that household object into a watch in 1976, then returned to its archive for a new edition announced on 28 August 2026. The recreation pairs a 37mm gold-tone steel case with quartz day-date timekeeping and an official Australian price of A$390. Its full name is the Timex 1976 Rotary Phone Dial Reissue.

Eleven framed numerals around a day-date display

The black dial places each available Arabic hour marker in a polished gold-tone frame against a white field. Eleven framed numerals complete the rotary arrangement because a twin-window day-date display occupies the three o'clock position. Gold-tone hour, minute and seconds hands cross the relatively open black centre, while a printed minute track follows the outer edge. The white fields make the framed numbers read as separate apertures even though they form one conventional analogue dial. The telephone reference comes from the circular sequence and individually framed numerals rather than from a handset-shaped set of hands.

That day-date display supplies the main everyday function beyond time. Its twin portholes show the abbreviated day and calendar date side by side, interrupting the numeral sequence in the same place as a conventional date window. Black, white, gold and brown make up the visible palette. The Timex wordmark remains small at the upper centre, and the telephone treatment is concentrated around the hours. The arrangement preserves the archive model's direct visual joke without adding a handset graphic, keypad instructions or a modern digital display to explain it.

The gently rounded square outline gives more horizontal and vertical case area than a simple circular shell of the same diameter. Its narrow bezel also leaves a broad opening for the framed numeral arrangement. Those dimensions keep the reissue within the compact scale associated with many 1970s watches even though the dial graphic fills most of the available front surface.

Acrylic covers the dial. The plastic polymer was common in early and mid-century watches, and Timex describes it as highly impact resistant, warmer in appearance than modern mineral or sapphire alternatives, and capable of being polished to remove light scuffs. It is also softer and more prone to scratching than harder watch crystals. Water resistance is rated to 50 metres, which the brand specifies for short swims rather than snorkelling or poolside diving. The crown is the only external control needed for the analogue display and calendar.

The battery-powered quartz analogue movement drives hours, minutes, seconds, day and date. Timex specifies an SR920SW battery for reference TW2Y82100. The regulating system uses the steady vibration of a small quartz crystal, giving the watch the accuracy and low-maintenance operation expected from this movement type. There is no mechanical power-reserve figure because the watch does not use a mainspring, and its seconds hand advances in quartz-regulated steps. The brown strap is natural leather sourced through a Leather Working Group supplier, embossed with a crocodile-grain pattern, closed by a conventional buckle and fitted with quick-release spring bars. Timex says the sourcing standard reduces the strap's production impact.
