Timex shrinks the Atelier GMT Première M1a to 38mm

The Swiss-made automatic GMT returns in a more compact steel case, with bracelet and integrated rubber options from US$1,350.

Timex has added a 38mm case to its Atelier GMT Première M1a line, reducing the footprint of its Swiss-made automatic office GMT without simplifying its mechanics. Announced on 10 September 2026, the new model pairs a black enamel dial with a black-and-green 24-hour ring and comes on either a stainless-steel bracelet or an integrated black rubber strap. The two references are TW6A07200 and TW6A07300, priced in Australia at A$2,550 and A$2,400 respectively.

A smaller case changes the proposition

The headline measurement is 38mm across, but the supporting dimensions matter just as much. Timex lists a 46.11mm lug-to-lug span and 13.8mm thickness, giving the Atelier enough vertical space for its automatic GMT movement and double-curved crystal without pushing the case into oversized territory. An 18mm attachment width keeps the bracelet and strap in proportion with the narrower case.

This is not a conventional round case with a decorative gold accent. The stainless-steel outer structure is cut away to reveal an IP gold-plated middle case, and the matching gold-plated screw-down crown sits against the otherwise cool metal. Brushed surfaces give the architecture definition, while the polished and plated elements supply contrast. A stainless-steel exhibition back exposes the movement from the other side.

The black enamel dial is deliberately restrained. Applied baton markers and gold-tone hands establish the local time, while a separate arrow-tipped GMT hand points to the 24-hour scale. Green marks the daytime half of that ring and black covers the night hours. The arrangement lets the second time zone read as an extra layer rather than a competing subdial.

Landeron 24 supplies the second time zone

Inside is the Swiss-made Landeron 24 GMT, an automatic calibre running at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It has 28 jewels and a stated 40-hour power reserve. Timex quotes daily accuracy of plus 10 to minus 15 seconds, a useful published tolerance for buyers comparing the watch with other Swiss automatic GMTs in this price range.

The movement drives local hours, minutes and seconds, a date window at three o'clock and the additional 24-hour hand. Timex identifies it as an office GMT complication, also known as a caller GMT, so the independently adjustable hand is the 24-hour hand rather than the local 12-hour hand. The wearer can keep another zone on the 24-hour ring while leaving the main hands on local time.

A double-curved sapphire crystal protects the dial. Timex adds a triple-layer anti-reflective treatment, which is especially relevant here because the curved surface, enamel dial and gold-tone hardware could otherwise generate distracting reflections. Water resistance is 50 metres, suitable for everyday exposure and light swimming but not the specification of a dedicated sports watch.

Bracelet or integrated rubber

Reference TW6A07200 comes on a stainless-steel bracelet with a butterfly deployant buckle. Timex describes the links as easy to resize, a useful detail in a watch that otherwise leans into formal finishing. The bracelet tapers towards the clasp and continues the brushed case surface down the wrist.

Reference TW6A07300 replaces the bracelet with an integrated NBR rubber strap. The black strap flows directly into the case and closes with a custom deployant clasp. Timex specifies resistance to oils, chemicals and wear, while quick-release spring bars allow the attachment to be removed without tools. The rubber version is A$150 less than the bracelet model in Australia and US$100 less in the United States.

Neither attachment changes the case, dial or calibre, so the choice is mostly about weight, texture and how formal the watch should feel. The bracelet emphasises the steel framework and makes the gold middle case more conspicuous. The rubber strap pulls the black dial and 24-hour ring into a more continuous, contemporary shape.
