Tutima shrinks its pilot's watch to 38.5mm and builds it in Grade 5 titanium

The Flieger T5 arrives in three references with glossy black or blue dials, a 41-hour in-house automatic and a sapphire display back.

Titanium got into watchmaking through the military, not through fashion, and Tutima was there early. The brand's own account has it among the first manufacturers to work the metal, choosing it for the case of the NATO chronograph that remains the piece most people can name when the Glashütte firm comes up. That was a large watch for people doing a specific job. What has arrived now is the opposite: a compact three-hander that borrows all of the same material knowledge, the Flieger T5.

Thirty-eight and a half millimetres, which is the entire pitch

The case measures 38.5 millimetres across in Grade 5 titanium, and that combination is doing something quite specific. Titanium is markedly less dense than steel, so a 38.5 millimetre case in it lands on the wrist with almost no presence at all, and the usual complaint about smaller pilot's watches, that they feel insubstantial, gets neatly sidestepped because nobody expects heft from titanium in the first place. It is the difference between a watch you notice all day and one you check because you have forgotten it is there.

Grade 5 is the alloyed version rather than commercially pure titanium, which matters because it takes a finish and holds an edge in a way the softer grades do not. Tutima has kept the surfaces restrained, and in daylight the case reads as a flat pewter grey, closer to the colour of a well used baking tray than to the bright white of polished steel.

A pilot's dial that has not been prettied up

Tutima describes the dial simply as glossy black or glossy blue, and glossy is the operative word, because it holds its colour flat across the whole surface instead of fanning light out from the centre the way a sunray finish does. The brand's own photographs show the rest: Arabic numerals at the even hours, baton markers between them, broad white hands, and the triangle with two dots at twelve that marks this out as a flieger rather than a field watch. It is a legibility-first layout and it does not apologise for that.

There is a date window, which will annoy the flieger purists, and I am not going to pretend to be one of them. A pilot's watch is an instrument and a date is information. If you want the ideologically pure version there are plenty of German brands who will happily sell you one with less on the dial and no more usefulness.

A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment sits over the top, and the crown screws in. Water resistance is 10 atmospheres, which for a watch of this type means it survives rain, hand-washing and an unplanned dunking without you having to think about it, and is not an invitation to swim laps.

Calibre 330, and the case for a modest barrel

Turn it over and there is a sapphire display back, which on a titanium watch is a slightly unusual choice, because the whole appeal of titanium is that you stop thinking about the watch. What it reveals is the automatic calibre Tutima 330, its rotor rhodium-plated and carrying the gold seal the brand puts on its own movements, with polished screws visible around it. Power reserve is 41 hours.

Forty-one is a modest number in a market that has spent five years chasing seventy and eighty, and I think it is the right call here rather than a compromise. Longer reserves come from bigger barrels, bigger barrels come from taller movements, and a taller movement would have undone the one thing this watch is for. Tutima has protected the proportions instead of the spec sheet, which is a trade more brands should be willing to make and almost none are, because power reserve is the number that sells.

Three references, two of which are on titanium

The Flieger T5 arrives as three references. The 6109-02 pairs the glossy black dial with a titanium bracelet and titanium folding clasp. The 6109-04 does the same in glossy blue. The 6109-03 puts the blue dial on a light brown Horween leather strap with a blue lining, and it is the one I would take, partly because a tan strap against a grey case is a much warmer combination than titanium usually manages, and partly because Horween leather is the rare strap that improves rather than degrades.

A titanium bracelet on a titanium case is the correct answer if you want the lightest possible result, and it will be startlingly light. Whether that is a pleasure or an uncanny absence is genuinely a matter of taste, and it is the one thing here nobody should buy unseen.

Tutima Flieger T5 pricing and availability

All three references, 6109-02, 6109-03 and 6109-04, are listed as current in Tutima's Flieger collection, sold through the brand's retailer network rather than direct. Tutima does not publish prices on its own site, so there is no recommended figure to quote. Australian availability has not been announced.

The T5 makes a claim that gets made a lot and delivered on rarely, which is that a pilot's watch can be shrunk without becoming a dress watch wearing a triangle at twelve. The glossy dial, the screw-in crown and the flat titanium surfaces all pull in the same direction. It is a small watch that has not been made polite, which is a harder thing to design than a big one.
