Accutron revives the Memphis 521 with a 262 kHz resonator
A television-shaped 904L steel case, mocha mother-of-pearl dial and orange leather strap give the new Memphis 521 26A217 a character apart from Accutron’s other resonator watches.

- Accutron announced a new Memphis 521 in October 2026, placing its 262 kHz resonator movement in a case shape linked to 1960.
- The 35.1 × 35.8 mm 904L steel case surrounds a mocha mother-of-pearl dial and carries a full-grain orange Italian leather strap.
- The 26A217 has a US$1,650 list price, with October retailer availability announced but no Australian price or local date confirmed.

It is easy to borrow the outline of an old watch and call the result a revival. The harder part is deciding which parts of that outline still earn their place on a wrist. Accutron has gone back to a silhouette it dates to 1960, retaining a broad, slightly skewed television shape while fitting its newly announced resonator movement inside. The orange strap and mocha mother-of-pearl face make this a more particular object than a generic heritage reissue. The watch is the Accutron Memphis 521 26A217.
The old television shape, made in 904L steel
Accutron gives the new Memphis a 35.1 by 35.8 mm case in 904L stainless steel, with a thickness of 10.83 mm. Those are useful dimensions for a non-round watch: the width of a square or television case puts metal into the corners, so a single diameter rarely tells the whole story. The brand does not publish a lug-to-lug figure, and we have not worn one, but the specification at least makes the footprint clear. A domed sapphire crystal rises over the dial, and the water-resistance claim stops at splash resistant rather than naming a depth.
The official photographs show why the case works. It is not a plain square with a dial pushed inside: the outer frame bows gently, the top and bottom edges pull against one another, and the crown sits beside a pronounced right-hand shoulder. Wide, open lugs hold the strap without pretending this is a round watch in disguise. The polished steel catches the straight markings around the dial, giving those lines an architectural frame. The design refers to Accutron's earlier Memphis rather than claiming to reproduce every part of a 1960 reference.

Mocha mother-of-pearl behind sharp hour marks
The central dial is mocha mother-of-pearl, a material whose mottled colour changes across the face in Accutron's own product images. Around it is an orange-brown chapter ring with long, fine minute strokes and polished hour markers. The slim central seconds hand travels across both fields, so the unusual dial material does not take away the basic job of reading time. Accutron keeps the three-hand layout free of a date window, leaving the off-centre-looking square and its strong minute track to carry the design.
At six o'clock, the tuning-fork emblem is a small link to the company name rather than a giant heritage badge. I think that restraint helps. The mother-of-pearl and orange leather could have become a costume version of a vintage watch, but the hard steel edges and narrow markers keep it sharper. It is a design judgement based on the published photographs, not a claim about how the surfaces will behave in person. A dial like this deserves to be seen under changing light before anyone calls its colours predictable.
A resonator inside the revived case
This Memphis 521 is part of the same resonator launch as the contemporary Elevation family, but its case and dial tell a different story. Accutron describes a proprietary three-prong, tuning-fork-shaped crystal vibrating at 262 kHz, eight times the frequency it assigns to conventional quartz, and claims accuracy within seconds per year. The product's technical panel also calls the movement NM33 Precisionist. Those labels appear together in the maker's material, so it would be too neat to erase either one in favour of a simple mechanical-versus-quartz description.
The high frequency is the watch's engineering pitch; the revival design is the reason to notice this reference rather than any other resonator model. There is no power reserve or winding routine to discuss in the official specification, and Accutron does not give a numerical accuracy tolerance more precise than its "within seconds per year" language here. The launch puts the same technology in both the contemporary Elevation and this heritage-inspired Memphis 521. Here it sits inside a shape the company itself connects to its 1960 beginnings.
Accutron uses a full-grain orange Italian leather strap and a foldover deployant clasp. The leather continues the chapter ring's warmth, while the clasp adds a more structured fastening than a simple pin buckle. In the angled product image, the straps leave the case at its widest points and keep its unusual outline visible. No bracelet is specified for this exact 26A217, though other Memphis references appear in the same family. This one is best understood as the orange-strap, mocha-dial configuration, not as a shorthand for every version.
There is a useful tension in that combination of old form and new oscillator. Nostalgia can be an excuse to leave a watch technically uninteresting, and a novel movement can be an excuse to give it an anonymous shell. Accutron has put both propositions in one compact case. Whether the Memphis outline feels comfortable is a question only a wrist can answer, but on the evidence available, its design has enough specificity to stand apart from the other watches in this launch.
