Hamilton gives its 1926 Cushion a slim, hand-wound return
An engraved 34mm square case, small seconds and an Australian list price of A$1,725 make this revival unusually clear about its appeal.

- Hamilton revives its 1926 Cushion shape in a 34mm engraved steel watch with a hand-wound movement and small seconds at six.
- The silvery-white dial pairs square numerals with a railroad minute track, while the case stays 8.1mm thick and 38mm long.
- Reference H36149710 lists at A$1,725 on Hamilton’s Australian site, which currently marks the black-leather-strapped watch as available soon.

The cushion case has a peculiar talent for making an old design feel unfamiliar again. Its corners soften the square, while the dial remains orderly enough to escape the novelty-watch trap. Hamilton has reached back to its Cushion watches of 1926 for this release, a century that gives the shape a genuine family connection rather than a borrowed vintage pose. The white-dial, engraved-case version is reference H36149710, the Hamilton American Classic Cushion Mechanical Small Second.
A square that keeps its edges soft
Hamilton specifies a 34 by 34mm stainless-steel case, 8.1mm thick and 38mm from lug to lug. Those numbers matter more than a simple 34mm diameter comparison with a round watch, because the square puts metal in the corners where a circle leaves air. The short length should still make it easier to position on a smaller wrist. A sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating protects the front, while an open caseback lets the owner see the movement.
This particular reference adds engraving to the case. It gives the compact outline some texture without putting another colour or material between the dial and the eye. Hamilton rates the watch to 5 bar, or 50 metres, a sensible everyday specification rather than an invitation to treat a leather-strapped dress watch as a swimming companion. I would choose this engraved version over a plain case: the decoration belongs to the case shape, where it catches light at the edges, instead of asking the dial to carry everything.
The little seconds hand does the talking
On the silvery-white dial, stylised square numerals sit within a railroad minute track. The small-seconds register at six o'clock interrupts the otherwise balanced face just enough to reveal the mechanism behind it. That lower register is the crucial choice here. A centre seconds hand might have made the Cushion feel like one more vintage-styled three-hander; the subsidiary display gives the face a slightly older rhythm without making the time difficult to read.

Look closely at the relationship between those numerals and the case corners. The square marks repeat the outline in miniature, while the minute track restores the round sweep that a pair of hands needs. It is an effective compromise between geometry and legibility. Hamilton also lists Super-LumiNova among the watch's features, although the product specification does not give a detailed map of where it is applied. The dial is appealing enough without a promise about night-time performance that the brand has not made.
A thin hand-wound movement inside
The hand-wound H-42 movement is based on the ETA 7001 and carries a stated 57-hour power reserve. Hamilton specifies a Nivachron balance spring, while the open back provides a direct view of the calibre rather than hiding the mechanism under a solid commemorative engraving. Winding it is part of owning this watch. That seems particularly apt for a revival of a 1926 case form: a manual movement gives the daily interaction some purpose, while the reserve is long enough that a missed evening need not immediately stop the watch.
There is a trade-off in choosing manual winding, especially for somebody who wants to put a watch on and forget it. The reward here is an 8.1mm case, and a view through the back without an automatic rotor covering the movement. I cannot claim how it feels on the wrist from a product photograph, but the published dimensions suggest a watch designed to slip beneath a cuff rather than announce itself across the room. This is one of those instances where restraint does more work than an added complication.
Hamilton pairs H36149710 with a black leather strap and lists an 18mm lug width. That is a conventional size with plenty of replacement options, useful once the original strap eventually wears. The dark strap also frames the bright dial and engraved steel without competing for attention. It looks especially natural on a shape that came from the dressier side of the 1920s, though I would be curious to see it on a textured brown strap after some time in use.
Hamilton American Classic Cushion Mechanical Small Second pricing and availability
Hamilton's Australian product page lists reference H36149710 at A$1,725 and marks it “Available soon”. That is the published Australian list price for this engraved, white-dial watch on black leather, not a price for every variant in the Cushion range. The maker announced the revived collection on 1 October 2026. No precise Australian delivery date appears on the product page, so the availability notice is the most specific local guidance currently offered.
The interesting part of this watch is not that Hamilton can reproduce a century-old outline. Plenty of makers can borrow a cushion shape. What works is the way the small seconds, square numerals and slim manual case pull in the same direction, with the engraving adding detail only where the case can use it. At A$1,725 it will have to persuade somebody who has many familiar round watches to choose the stranger outline. I think that is precisely its best argument.
