Longines gives the Spirit Pilot and Flyback a blue dial

Four blue references pair compact cases with either an automatic three-hander or hand-wound flyback chronograph.

Longines has added blue-dialled versions of the Spirit Pilot and Spirit Pilot Flyback, giving its two aviation watches a common colour without pretending they are the same proposition. The simpler Pilot remains an automatic three-hander at 39mm. The Flyback is a hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph at 39.5mm. Both are available on either a steel bracelet or a blue rubber strap, and all four references are now listed by Longines in Australia.

That distinction matters. This is not one watch with an optional complication. The Pilot is the quieter daily piece, while the Flyback brings a countdown bezel, two-register chronograph and a movement that asks to be wound. The shared matt blue dial and compact proportions make the pair look related, but the mechanics keep their characters separate.

The Spirit Pilot stays simple

The new Spirit Pilot uses a 39mm stainless-steel case measuring 11.5mm thick and 47.2mm from lug to lug. Its matt blue dial carries 12 applied Arabic numerals, all treated with Super-LumiNova, along with rhodium-plated luminous hands. There is no date window. That leaves the dial balanced and gives the watch a clear instrument-like layout.

Inside is Longines calibre L888.4, an automatic movement with a silicon balance spring, resistance to magnetic fields under ISO 764 and up to 72 hours of power reserve. It runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour, uses 21 jewels and is certified as a chronometer by COSC. The screw-in crown and screw-down caseback help the steel case reach 100 metres of water resistance.

The bracelet reference is L3.809.4.93.6. It uses a double-folding safety clasp with push-button opening and micro-adjustment. Reference L3.809.4.93.9 swaps the steel for an interchangeable blue rubber strap with a pin buckle. Both use a 20mm lug width, which keeps the proportions conventional and should make later strap changes straightforward.

The Flyback has the stronger mechanical argument

Longines has made the Spirit Pilot Flyback slightly larger at 39.5mm, although it remains a measured 47.4mm from lug to lug. Thickness is 13.4mm. A blue ceramic insert sits in the bidirectional bezel and carries a luminous countdown scale, a useful difference from the more common elapsed-time bezel. The matt blue dial has 10 applied Arabic numerals, small seconds at nine o'clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at three.

Calibre L792.4 is the key change in personality. It is a hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph movement with a flyback function, allowing the central chronograph seconds hand to stop, reset and restart in one action. The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 23 jewels and provides up to 68 hours of reserve. Like the three-hand calibre, it uses a silicon balance spring, meets ISO 764 magnetic-resistance requirements and carries COSC certification.

The sapphire caseback exposes the movement, while the front sapphire crystal has multi-layer anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water resistance is again 100 metres. Reference L3.721.4.93.6 comes on the micro-adjustable steel bracelet; L3.721.4.93.9 uses the interchangeable blue rubber strap.

Blue changes the tone, not the formula

Blue is hardly a radical watch colour, but it works differently across these cases. On the Pilot, it softens a stripped-back layout that might otherwise read as strictly military. On the Flyback, the matching dial and ceramic bezel make the denser display feel more coherent. The effect is decorative without obscuring the practical differences between the models.

The sizing also helps. Longines has resisted pushing the chronograph beyond 40mm, yet it has kept enough thickness and bezel presence for the Flyback to feel like the more technical watch. The three-hander's 11.5mm case should be the easier choice under a cuff. Neither needs an invented heritage story to explain itself: one is an automatic time-only pilot's watch, the other a compact mechanical flyback.

Neither dial carries a date window. That decision is especially useful on the Pilot, where it preserves the full ring of luminous numerals, but it also keeps the Flyback's two registers and central timing hand from competing with another aperture. The watches trade calendar convenience for cleaner symmetry.

Australian pricing and availability

Longines lists all four watches on its Australian site. The Spirit Pilot costs A$4,000 on blue rubber and A$4,550 on the steel bracelet. The Spirit Pilot Flyback is A$7,825 on rubber and A$8,375 on steel.

The gap between the families is substantial, but it reflects more than an added pair of pushers. The Flyback brings a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph, flyback reset, ceramic countdown bezel and display caseback. Buyers who chiefly want the blue dial and compact aviation styling can take the Pilot without paying for that machinery. Those drawn to the Flyback are paying for a genuinely different movement and operating experience, not just a busier dial.
