Timex adds ice blue and brown to the Marlin GMT

Two 40mm quartz GMTs offer either an ice-blue dial on steel or chocolate brown on leather.

Timex has added two colourways to the quartz Marlin GMT: an ice-blue dial on a steel bracelet and a chocolate-brown dial on leather. Both keep the collection's polished 40mm case, domed acrylic crystal and second-time-zone display. In Australia, the new references are priced at A$450 and A$395 respectively.

The update is primarily about colour, but the two versions do not feel interchangeable. The blue watch is cooler and more technical, helped by its steel bracelet and blue GMT accents. The brown watch uses gold-tone markers, a triangular GMT hand with luminous fill and a leather strap, pushing the same case towards a warmer, more traditional look.

Ice blue on steel

Reference TW2Y84100 uses an ice-blue sunray dial with blue faceted hour markers. A blue-and-brown 24-hour scale circles the dial, and the blue-and-white triangular GMT hand has luminous fill. The date window sits at three o'clock.

The stainless-steel bracelet combines brushed and polished surfaces and includes quick-release spring bars. That makes a later strap change possible without a tool, although the supplied bracelet is a major part of this version's appeal. Against the pale dial, it gives the watch a crisp, almost monochromatic base before the blue accents take over.

Chocolate brown on leather

Reference TW2Y84200 starts with the same polished stainless-steel case but changes the dial to a chocolate-brown sunray finish. Gold-tone faceted markers replace the blue set, while a tonal 24-hour scale and triangular GMT hand with luminous fill supply the second-time-zone display.

The brown natural-leather strap has a smooth grain and quick-release spring bars. Timex identifies it as a Leather Working Group sourced strap. The watch weighs 50.25 grams on leather, making it the lighter-feeling option as well as the less expensive one.

This version is the more cohesive of the pair if the aim is vintage warmth. The brown dial, gold-tone details and acrylic dome all point in the same direction. The blue reference uses contrast more deliberately, combining a contemporary pastel dial with the Marlin's older case language.

A simple quartz GMT

Both watches use a battery-powered quartz analogue GMT movement. The extra hand tracks a second time zone against the 24-hour scale, while the central hour and minute hands continue to show local time.

The cases are 40mm wide, 13.5mm thick and 47.5mm from lug to lug, with a 20mm attachment width. Those dimensions give the domed crystal room to shape the profile without making the dial excessively large. The polished case is stainless steel, and water resistance is rated to 50 metres.

Timex describes the domed acrylic crystal as giving the dial a warm, vintage-inspired appearance and notes that light scuffs can be polished out. Luminous fill on the GMT hands improves the second-time-zone display in low light, while the date window adds another everyday function.

Colour does most of the work

There is no new mechanical argument here. Timex has taken an existing Marlin GMT format and used dial, marker and strap choices to alter its mood. That is honest product development, provided buyers recognise that the complication and case architecture are shared.

The ice-blue watch is likely to attract buyers who want the bracelet and the most immediately modern colour. The brown model is more restrained and costs less. Both remain recognisably Marlin because the polished case and acrylic dome carry more of the family resemblance than the dial colour.

The 24-hour scales are tonal rather than high-contrast tool-watch bezels. That keeps the dials calm, but it also means the second time zone asks for a more considered glance than a black-and-white GMT insert would. The large triangular tips on the extra hands compensate, and their luminous fill should be useful when the smaller scale markings recede after dark.

For owners who rarely travel, the GMT hand can still track a distant colleague, family member or a preferred reference time. It is a modest complication, and quartz makes it easy to leave running without winding or resetting after a short spell off the wrist.

Australian pricing

Timex lists the ice-blue TW2Y84100 at A$450 on its steel bracelet. The chocolate-brown TW2Y84200 is A$395 on leather.

The A$55 gap buys the bracelet rather than a different movement or case. That makes the decision unusually clear. Choose the blue model for the steel attachment and sharper palette; choose the brown model for lower weight, leather and the warmer dial.
