Timex brings measurement scales to the Marlin Neo Classic

The 40mm quartz chronograph combines telemeter and tachymeter scales with steel or leather attachments.

The Timex Marlin Neo Classic Chronograph takes the familiar 40mm Marlin format and gives it a busier, multi-scale dial. Three references combine a quartz chronograph with telemeter and tachymeter markings, domed acrylic crystal and either a steel bracelet or leather strap. Australian prices start at A$500.

Timex describes the design as vintage-inspired. The dial carries the instrument detail while the case remains visually simple, leaving the colour and attachment choices to set the tone.

One case, three executions

All three versions use a 40mm stainless-steel case measuring 13mm thick and 48.5mm from lug to lug. Curved pushers sit either side of the crown, while the brushed case is lifted by a polished top ring. A domed acrylic crystal completes the vintage-leaning profile.

Reference TW3A00300 pairs a cream dial with a stainless-steel bracelet. Metallic blue hands and numerals, small red details and the concentric timing scales give it the strongest technical look. The bracelet uses quick-release spring bars and closes with a butterfly clasp.

Reference TW6A01200 keeps the cream dial but moves to a black natural-leather strap. Reference TW3A00200 changes the dial more substantially, using a silver-tone base with light-blue subdials and a brown natural-leather strap. Timex says both leather straps are sourced through the Leather Working Group and include quick-release spring bars.

The shared 20mm lug width makes the watches easy to understand as variants of one design. Bracelet for the brightest, most polished presentation; black leather for a more formal contrast; brown leather and blue subdials for the softer option.

What the scales actually do

The quartz chronograph records elapsed time with conventional start, stop and reset pushers. Its tachymeter scale can turn a measured time over a known distance into an average speed. The telemeter estimates distance by timing the gap between seeing an event and hearing it, such as lightning and thunder.

Neither scale is essential to daily life, and most owners will probably use the chronograph more often than either calculation. Their value is partly visual: the concentric markings make the dial feel like a compact measuring instrument. Timex has balanced that density with two subdials, one for running seconds and another for a 24-hour display.

The quartz movement uses an SR920SW battery. Timex describes the watch as low maintenance, which fits a model built around a practical chronograph display and battery-powered timekeeping.

A deliberate vintage compromise

Acrylic crystal is central to the look. Timex describes the dome as giving the dial a warm, vintage-inspired appearance and notes that light scuffs can be polished out. That maintenance point matters because acrylic can show wear; some buyers may accept it as part of the period profile.

The case is water resistant to 50 metres, suitable for rain and short swims but not for diving. Timex lists the bracelet version at 134.06 grams. Luminous hands help at night, while the Arabic numerals and contrasting hands keep the time readable despite the surrounding scales.

The design works because the complexity is concentrated on the dial. The case flanks, pushers and lugs remain restrained, and the strap choices can make the same layout read quite differently. On steel, it feels like a bright retro sports watch. On leather, it moves closer to a dress chronograph.

Legibility will depend on what the wearer asks from it. The broad blue hands stand out against the cream dial at a glance, while the finer telemeter and tachymeter markings require a deliberate look. That hierarchy is sensible: ordinary time remains primary, and the specialised scales wait until they are needed. The silver-tone and blue version is slightly lower in contrast, but its subdials are easier to distinguish as separate elements.

The watch also avoids one common retro shortcut. There is no artificial ageing on the luminous material or dial furniture. Its period character comes from the typography, domed crystal, scales and case shape rather than beige paint, which should let the three colourways age on their own terms.

The bracelet-equipped TW3A00300 is A$575. Both leather references, TW6A01200 with the cream dial and TW3A00200 with the silver-tone and blue dial, are A$500.

That A$75 bracelet premium is straightforward, and the watches otherwise share the same case dimensions, quartz chronograph architecture, acrylic crystal and 50-metre water rating. Choosing between them is therefore mostly a question of dial treatment and attachment rather than hidden specifications.
